Neutropenia is the presence of abnormally few neutrophils in the blood, leading to increased susceptibility to infection. Neutrophils are a common type of white blood cell important to fighting off infections. In adults, less than 1,500 neutrophils per microliter of blood are considered to be neutropenia. Neutropenia is an undesirable side effect of some cancer treatments.
